Carpenter’s Pod - 5 Weeks

  • The BVT Scene Shop is generously provided by Hazlitt Vineyards

  • The "Wall of Success" features all of the nearly 70 scenic elements built in just 5 weeks

  • The array of 8 bookshelves constructed for "It's a Small World" cemented 2022 as the 'summer of bookselves'

  • Scenic Painter Shae Posecznick paints "Amy and the Orphans" on one of the few rainy days of the summer

  • Christian Ward uses our large format circle jig to cut a 17' diameter circular platform lid

  • Sara Baird works on a 22' wide curved wall segment for "Once: The Musical"

  • The Hazlitt Barn served as scene shop, secondary paint deck, and storage for the summer

Scene Shop Improvements

It is the nature of summer stock theatre - notorious for high turnover and limited resources - to be chaotic and fast-paced. Each summer more trash accumulates, tools get lost, and spaces like the scene shop are difficult to maintain. When my team arrived, the shop was in a state of disarray and disrepair.

LEAVE IT BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT

My talented carpentry team was able to finish building the scenery ahead of schedule. Instead of calling off work a week early, we decided to pay it forward. I designed a number of shop improvements and together we gave the BVT Scene Shop a major update.

  • We built a tool cabinet with charging station and space for hand and power tools. When we arrived, all the tools were in a messy pile on the table!

  • We scrapped the old vertical sheet goods storage and replaced it with a horizontal storage rack.

  • We reorganized all the stock flats, installed new vertical dividers, and built some new stock 4x8 flats!

  • We built a hardware storage cabinet including 70 labelled drawers.

  • We DEEP cleaned the break room and reorganized it. This was full to the brim with trash, old furniture and hardware.

  • We scrapped the previous 8' lumber rack and replaced it with a 16' lumber rack.

  • Here's the 16' Lumber rack ready for install.

  • We built 8 new saw horses - and painted them BVT Purple!

  • The work tables are seen here stored away for the winter, ready to come out in 2023!

Finally, we threw away nearly 2 tons of garbage and accumulated construction waste over the course of the summer!

Note: No stock scenery was harmed in the cleaning of this scene shop.
